Rehabilitation for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is treated with brief intervention with proper splinting to minimize joint deformity, proper instruction in compensatory strategy and activities of daily living, and proper exercise technique to maintain strength and mobility without creating inflammation.  Postoperative reconstruction for RA with joint replacement and tendon realignment is managed immediately Post-op with wound care, custom made dynamic and static protective splinting and proper exercise.

Osteoarthritis CMC Joint of the Thumb

Patients with osteoarthritis (OA) are treated in the same manner with early intervention for exercise, splinting, and compensatory   strategy.  The most common issue that we see is OA of the base of the thumb; basilar thumb arthritis is treated conservatively with custom splinting for the thumb to reduce pinch forces, and postoperatively we manage these cases most often from 24 hours PO for wound care, splinting and controlled motion
